Researchers at the Institute of Nano- and Microfluidics and colleagues from the National Institute of Technology Calicut and Tsinghua University have developed a method enabling the trapping and manipulation of nano- and microparticles based on interfacial flows controlled by visible light.

Der SFB 1194 auf dem 2. Tag der Interdisziplinarität
Der 5. November 2018 stand im Zeichen der interdisziplinären Forschung an der TU Darmstadt. Der SFB 1194 war mit einem Infostand beteiligt, an dem Einblicke in die Zusammenarbeit über disziplinäre Grenzen hinweg gegeben wurden. Im SFB 1194 arbeiten Forscher*innen aus Maschinenbau, Mathematik, Chemie, Physik, Materialwissenschaften und Informatik.

Peter Stephan receives VDI honorary medal

VDI-GVC honours outstanding work in the field of heat and mass transfer, commitment to VDI Heat Atlas
The working group process and chemical engineering of the Association of German Engineers (VDI-GVC) has awarded professor Peter Stephan a VDI honorary medal. During the annual meeting of ProcessNet 2018 in Aachen professor Stephan was acknowledged for his internationally renowned work and achievements in the field of heat and mass transfer, and for his commitment to the further development of the VDI Heat Atlas, a standard in the field of heat transfer.

Drei ERC Starting Grants für Forschung an der TU Darmstadt
Drei Forschungsprojekte an der TU Darmstadt werden vom Europäischen Forschungsrat (ERC) als exzellente und innovative Grundlagen- und Pionierforschung mit ERC Starting Grants gefördert. Insgesamt fließen rund 5,2 Millionen Euro an drei Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und -wissenschaftler. Zwei dieser Projekte stärken das unmittelbare wissenschaftliche Umfeld des Exzellenzclusters „Predictive Thermofluids“, mit dem die TU Darmstadt im Exzellenzwettbewerb im Rennen ist.

ULB Darmstadt awarded in ideas competition
The ULB Darmstadt and the RWTH Aachen have won prize money in the ideas competition “Science in the Digital Revolution” sponsored by Forschungszentrum Jülich as part of a research project of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The concept aims to support data management planning in Mechanical Engineering.

Highly accurate algorithms for flow simulation

Florian Kummer awarded Prize of the Adolf Messer Foundation 2017
He has achieved a leading position in the development of high order, high accurate flow simulation methods: Dr. Florian Kummer from the Institute for Fluid Dynamics (Department of Mechanical Engineering) has been awarded the Prize of the Adolf Messer Foundation 2017. The award, which comes with € 50,000 prize money, is the most important award for research projects at the TU Darmstadt.

International Conference in Aerospace for Young Scientists
Sebastian Brulin was awarded the best paper award at the International Conference in Aerospace for Young Scientists ICAYS 2017 in Beijing. Brulin presented a paper entitled: “Breakup of a stretching liquid bridge” in which the stretching behaviour of liquid bridges for high accelerations is investigated.

Der Industrieverband Massivumformung hat Dr.-Ing. Benjamin Lambie, Geschäftsführer des Profilbereichs TFI, mit dem IMU-Förderpreis 2017 ausgezeichnet. Der Preis wurde für die Studie „Einsatzmöglichkeiten der Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) bei der numerischen Simulation der Strömung in Sprühköpfen für das Gesenkschmieden" vergeben.

Wissenschaftsrat empfiehlt TU-Projekt zur Förderung
Ein wichtiges Etappenziel für den Ausbau des Lichtenberg-Hochleistungsrechners ist geschafft: Der Wissenschaftsrat hat während seiner Frühjahrssitzungen das TU-Vorhaben „Lichtenberg II“ für die Förderung im Bund-Länder-Programm Forschungsbauten empfohlen. Beantragt sind 15 Millionen Euro, über die die Gemeinsame Wissenschaftskonferenz von Bund und Ländern Ende Juni entscheiden wird.

New book on the physical foundations of collision and impact phenomena
Prof. Alexander L. Yarin (University of Illinois, Chicago), Prof. Ilia V. Roisman and Prof. Cameron Tropea (Institute for Fluid Mechanics and Aerodynamics) have edited a new book entitled “Collision Phenomena in Liquids and Solids”. The monograph gives a comprehensive account of the physical foundations of collision and impact phenomena and their applications in a multitude of engineering disciplines.

Dr. Lukas Kaltschnee has been awarded the Kurt-Ruths prize 2017. The chemist receives the award which comes with a 20,000 prize money for his outstanding dissertation entitled “Development and Evaluation of Experiments for Pure Shift Solution-State Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy”.

TU Darmstadt promotes publishing of research articles in open access journals from January 2017 onwards by creating an open access publishing fund for its members.
