Cameron Tropea receives Lefebvre award

Contributions to the field of atomization and sprays
The Institute for Liquid Atomization and Spray Systems (ILASS) has announced Professor Cameron Tropea as the 2021 recipient of the Arthur Lefebvre Award. Cameron Tropea's contributions to the development of innovative experimental methods for the investigation of complex disperse flows as well as his numerous studies on atomisation processes and sprays, droplet collisions, droplet-wall interactions and droplet physics were acknowledged.

Working at the interface between mechanical engineering and mathematics: “Athene Young Investigator” Dr. Tomislav Maric
How can accurate, efficient and extremely robust numerical methods be developed to simulate the movement of curved, dynamically deforming fluid interfaces on high-performance computers? This is the main research field of Dr.-Ing. Tomislav Maric, a postdoc in the Mathematical Modeling and Analysis Group. As a mechanical engineer in the Mathematics Department, who is conducting research as part of the interdisciplinary Collaborative Research Centre 1194, Tomislav Maric has been chosen as one of the new Athene Young Investigators at TU Darmstadt.

TU Darmstadt is partner in “NFDI4Ing” – National Research Data Infrastructure for the engineering sciences
The German Joint Science Conference (Gemeinsame Wissenschaftskonferenz – GWK) has decided to fund a consortium for engineering research data management. The National Research Data Infrastructure for the engineering sciences (NFDI4Ing). NFDI4Ing brings together the engineering communities. It offers a unique method-oriented and user-centred approach in order to make engineering research data FAIR – findable, accessible, interoperable, and re-usable.

On 19 November 2019, Ellen von Borzyskowski gave a keynote presentation on the TU Darmstadt's offers to support researchers on the topic of reconciling work, family and dual careers. In a subsequent panel discussion, members of the Collaborative Research Centres TRR 150, 1194 and 805 reported on their personal experiences.

CARAT is a consortium of international researchers, which was founded within the framework of the Multiscale Boiling Project (RUBI). Many of the participating research institutes have already developed computer-aided methods in order to efficiently evaluate the huge amount of experimental data. Within the framework of the CARAT project, these methods are to be bundled and jointly optimised.

Boiling shoebox for the ISS

Multiscale Boiling experiment to be launched in August
Scientists from TU Darmstadt have teamed up with colleagues from Europe, the US, Russia and Japan to launch a boiling experiment aboard the International Space Station (ISS). According to ESA the shoebox-sized setup is slated for launch in the coming days. The results may help scientists to develop more accurate models for heat transfer processes.

Team of ITN CoWet awarded Ralf Dahrendorf Prize 2019
The team of the ITN CoWet have been awarded the Ralf Dahrendorf Prize for the European Research Area. With this new prize the Federal Ministry of Education and Research honours excellent projects funded within the European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. The prize money of up to 50,000 euros is designated for science communication projects.

Multiscale Boiling Project: Last preparations for the ISS

Investigation of boiling phenomena in low gravity environment
From February 21-22, 2019, a group of European researchers has met at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, Netherlands to make last preparations for their experiment “Multiscale Boiling”. The experiment was designed to measure boiling phenomena under microgravity and is to be carried to the International Space Station ISS on July 8, 2019 with the Falcon 9 rocket. After installation, the experiment will be operated for several months.
