In a talk on 13 December 2019, Andreas Blaeser (Instiute for Printing Science and Technology) will give an overview on 3D bioprinting with a focus on drop-based printing.

Bioprinting is a digitalized biofabrication technology that applies the concepts of additive manufacturing to generate tissue precursor. Living cells embedded in a hydrogel matrix, referred to as bioink, are printed layer-by-layer to reconstruct the tissue of interest’s macro anatomy. Following the printing process the precursor structures are cultivated for several weeks in dedicated bioreactors or in a host organism to mature and form a biofunctional tissue unit.

The talk will give a broad overview on the general goals and challenges of bioprinting technology as well as currently applied printing methods. The second part of the presentation will focus on characteristics, challenges, and chances of drop-based printing in the context of this field of research.
