Best Presentation Award for Pauline Brumm

Contribution to the study of hydrodynamic pattern formation in gravure printing

2022/09/29

Pauline Brumm has been awarded a Best Presentation Award for her contribution on hydrodynamic pattern formation in gravure printing at iarigai/IC. The conference took place from 19 to 21 September 2022 at Clemson University in South Carolina, USA.

In her talk, which will also appear in the conference proceedings, Pauline Brumm reports on a comprehensive high-resolution image dataset that she and her colleagues created on an industrial web press to investigate hydrodynamic pattern formation in gravure printing.

These patterns have not yet been fully understood, but an accurate insight into the fluid transfer process is crucial for process control and for high quality printed layers. Pauline Brumm, together with colleagues at the IDD and partners at HdM Stuttgart, has conducted a large-scale gravure experiment on a web press.

The researchers analysed the phenomena of pattern formation with complementary methods such as deep learning, Fourier analysis, gradation and Mottle index measurements. More than 4,000 sheets were extracted and cut from over 23 km of printed film and paper, of which over 1,200 were scanned at a resolution of 2,400 dpi. This created an image dataset of more than three terabytes.

During the printing test, the printing speed, printing ink, ink viscosity, substrate and other parameters were systematically varied. The first results of the analysis are presented in an article that will appear in the conference proceedings.

The iarigai (International Association of Research Organizations for the Information, Media and Graphic Arts Industries) and IC (International Circle of Educational Institutes of Graphic-Media Technology and Management) are among the most important research and educational organisations for print media and packaging worldwide.
